The Mirror 'M' Magazine - I Love My...Teeny Tiny Trainers

Gail Porter (or Mrs Hipgrave, as she is now), 30, who recently married Toploader guitarist Dan Hipgrave, shares her passion for trainers of the retro kind...

'I must have at least 100 pairs of trainers dotted around my flat, but these royal blue '70s Adidas Summit are my current favourites. I wear them all the time as they go with everything - jeans, cords, denim skirts. I even wear them nude for my husband Dan's pleasure! I got them from this shop, Cinch, around the corner from my flat in Soho. I didn't look at the price and remember being quite shocked - £90! But they are original retro ones.

'I remember getting my first pair of proper trainers when I was 12, on holiday in Arran with my mum and dad. We went into a sports shop and there were these gorgeous white and pink ones with velcro straps. I loved them. I'm size 31/2 to 4, so I get children's trainers, VAT-free!

'I think I'm obsessed by trainers. In fact I have a new pink pair of Adidas waiting to be picked up today. I've got mostly Adidas and Nike, the Nike ones for the gym. I have fashion trainers and working-out trainers and never cross them over.

Dan and I have just bought a house so I'm not as bad for buying them as I was. I probably get a pair every two weeks now., as opposed to every week. I get sentimental and can't chuck them out, for no other reason than they may come back into fashion.

'My favourite trainers shop is on Carnaby Street. I go in there so often they've got a polaroid of me on the wall. I even dragged Dan in there on our first date. It was after the Q awards last year and we were both really drunk. I bought a pair, and didn't even try them on! I felt quite sorry for Dan, I don't think he knew what he was getting himself into.'

Gail will be presenting The Clotheshow Live at Birmingham NEC from 10 to 12 December.
